Peel Region released partially treated sewer water into Lake Ontario twice in 2017

Partially treated sewer water has twice this year flowed into Lake Ontario from a Peel Region treatment plant.

In total, about 104 million litres of wastewater — enough to fill more than 41 Olympic-sized swimming pools — was flushed into the lake without being fully treated for contamination.

The Secondary Bypass incidents, on May 5 and 25, reportedly occurred at the GE Booth (Lakeview) facility in Mississauga during heavy rainfalls that overwhelmed the system.
