Frequently Asked Questions

What is Formadrain?

Formadrain® is a steam-cured, pulled-in-place, fiberglass and epoxy no-dig pipe repair system. Without any excavation, it can perform lateral repairs, Lateral-Main-Connection® repairs, spot repairs and process piping repairs.

Isn’t Formadrain a foundation drain solution?

No. Formadrain® is a no-dig pipe repair system. The foundation solutions goes under “Form-A-Drain” and is a product by North American Pipe.

What sizes can Formadrain repair?

It can repair circular pipes from 2 to 48 inches (50 to 1200 mm) in diameter.

Does an access pit need to be dug up?

No. For a 4 to 6 inch (100mm to 150mm) transition, a 3 inch cleanout is enough for us to make the repair.

Does the pipe need to be clean?

Yes. Since it’s a pulled-in-place liner that we put inside the new pipe, anything that was there will stay trapped between the liner and the host pipe forever (ex: rocks, roots, grease).

Why fiberglass and epoxy?

Fiberglass and epoxy composites are very strong materials. This allows us to produce a very thin repair that exceeds the American Standards for Testing Materials (ASTM) requirements. Therefore, the lined pipe does not lose that much of its capacity.

Why use steam cure?

Steam cure allows better quality control and better working time. Installers can prepare the liner without any rush with our 4 hours of working time. However, once it’s in the ground and steamed, in 45 minutes to an hour, you’re 100% certain you have a completely cured liner ready to be used, even in colder winter temperatures.

Do I need a direct access to pull?

No. When performing a lateral repair, a cleanout is used as an insertion point and a downstream manhole is used to pull the repair. The pulling access does NOT need to be in line with the lateral, making the use of an existing manhole possible. You will need two access points though, one before the repair and one after.

Can a connection be lined with Formadrain?

Yes. We can line a T or Y connection with a branch going from 4 to 8 inches (100 to 200mm) and a main line from 4 to 24 inches (100 to 600mm) in size.

Can I install Formadrain myself as a homeowner?

No. Formadrain® is a complete system that requires specialized equipment and qualified personnel. Therefore, it is not a DIY product. If you need the technology installed at your house, you may refer to the Licensees section of the website to find the closest authorized Formadrain® Licensee.

How do I become a Formadrain® authorized Licensee?
