Formadrain Seminar on House Sewer Repair Options Draws Crowd

February 18, 2004 — An estimated 200 plumbers and sewer contractors sat in attendance at a special seminar at the 2004 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo, in Nashville, Tennessee.

The audience listened closely as Formadrain’s senior partners discussed various problems that can occur with house sewers (also known as laterals) and repair options.

Following the presentation, Gerard Marc-Aurele and Stephane Therrien, who hosted the seminar, answered more than 35 questions from the floor and during face to face meetings for 45 minutes.

Mr. Marc-Aurele, founding president and the inventor of the Formadrain No-Dig System opened the seminar with a story about the liability of having to dig when repairing house sewers.

“We cracked a single pipe,” recalled Mr. Marc-Aurele, “and when rain later destroyed underground power wires, etc., the insurance bill was so high we were uninsurable afterwards.  It cost us the company.”  This was the major reason he developed Formadrain’s exclusive no-dig system.

The next speaker was Mr. Therrien, Formadrain partner and engineer, started the main body of the presentation by giving attendees an idea of the size of the market in house sewer repairs:  “According to the U.S. Census Bureau there were more than 76 million house sewers connected to public sewers in the U.S. in 1990.  And at least 50 million of these are more than 30 years old.”

He then proceeded to discuss various problems that can occur with house sewers (laterals) including:

· Backups caused by roots

· Water Infiltration/Exfiltration

· Installation of non durable material for laterals such as tar paper pipes

Corrosion, open joints, offset joints, dips, pipe deformation, crushed pipes

Finally, various solutions were presented including

· Open Trench

· Pipe bursting

· Grouting

· Inversion Liner

· Pull in Place Liner

The seminar ended with a Question and Answer period.
